inventário para os nomes do fazer

estar

Imergir, mergulhar.

Escolher no mapa, marcar encontros, traçar pactos. Desenhar um caminho, fugir da rota. Deslocar-se, sair de si, de um lugar. Dedilhar a fronteira.

Juntar tudo e peregrinar, festejar, habitar.

Abrir poros. Preencher-se. Absorver o entorno, a duração do tempo, o sonho da(o) outra(o).

Provocar a própria falta. Não é o mesmo que desertar. inventory for the names of doing

being

Immersing, diving. Remaining, inhabiting, resisting in/as a place. Being settled by the ends, corners, recesses, and modes of inhabiting of the place. Inaugurating a small and brief between– with minimal gestures. The derivations of the verb: being with, which does not necessarily mean to say being something definitive, but instead experiencing an incomplete and temporary condition and, thus, interspersing oneself with the place and its discontinuous and unending constitutions, in such a way that one and the others are charged by them. Being where is the practice of place. A paradox: this derivation does not exist with an intention of totality, since it is possible to be where in many places at the same time and to carry the where to many times. Specifically, “where” is the air that is of interest to make denser.

being a foreigner

Presupposes some moments of a path. Choosing on the map, arranging meetings, tracing pacts. Drawing a path, going off the beaten track. Moving about, going outside oneself, outside of a place. Touching the border. Crossing, going through, leaving home. Living under a roof that is not your own, an outside body available to conversation, when everything is unpredictable. Throwing oneself into the uncertainty of hospitality and experiencing in a foreign language, in the momentary intimacy, in loving sociability. Being malleable. Returning and bringing handfuls of sand, talks, airs.

roaming the streets

Kicking a little stone along the sidewalk. Dismembering the body in the shoulder-to-shoulder, eye-to-eye, toe-to-toe collision. Getting everything together and pilgrimaging, partying, inhabiting. Paging through the space in the effervescence of differences.

(de)occupy

Adhering, going inside, being only “the deepest is the skin.”[1] Leaning over, bending down, being absent, approaching, metamorphosing oneself. Finding oneself in the measure one never was. A gesture in direct opposition to the occupying that is normally seen as an imposition.

drawing

A procedure that requires a place and an other and conjugations of being. Its time is while in/as the place. It requires adherence, passage, cross influence on a two-way street. Describing/narrating. Being an outline, drawing an outline of the place, while the body absorbs the climate. Being an outline, drawing an outline of the body, while the climate absorbs the body.

always returning

Adding addresses. Going, coming, going down, going up, running, getting up, walking, traveling, pilgrimaging, roaming. Exhausting oneself to go onward. Bringing packages, memories, expectations. Lending one’s eyes. Taking a risk. Living as if one were an other. Being once again, once again, anew, as though one had never been.

living together

Feeling with, being with, telling with, conversing with, disagreeing with, elaborating with, debating with, inventing another way of living with, dreaming with (despite), fabulating with, looking with. In the presence of someone else: exchanging and being a medium of exchange. Activating and driving. Happening and seeing the happening in company. “Because immersing yourself in thought is a thrill, and you only have the courage to think in front of someone else when you are confident enough not to feel uneasy about using, if necessary, the other person’s words. It moreover demands a lot from whoever watches us think: one needs a big heart, love, care, and the experience of also having been immersed in thought.”[2]

soaking things up

Opening pores. Getting filled. Absorbing the surroundings, the duration of time, the dream of the other. Claiming the condition of being another to bathe in someone.

overflowing

Opening pores. And after getting affected, swallowing, digesting; transforming, translating, continue modifying oneself because of the other. What overflows floods the place and one hears the question: where exactly are we? Flood the time of stories that do not belong to the voice that spreads them.

blowing like the wind

Spreading/ spraying/ sharing whatever comes one’s way.

talking about “us”

Gather people around an “us.” Our conflicts, our fears, our impossibilities, our forces, our uneasinesses, our mirrors are the ignition of this collective, polyphonic pronouncement, untranslatable to the one. Addressing and asking for an answer, before, in front of, together with. Drawing the complex object that causes recognition.

making oneself

Being “us.” Getting inflamed. Questioning oneself in light of something/someone/situation/place. Procedures only possible when one is not alone. An action simultaneous to talking about “us.” The body is outside and is made because there is more in regard to oneself. Or the same that one mixes with/mixes in. Changing oneself, losing the notion of authenticity, being another, like an insignificant accident impossible to be stopped. Multiplying oneself. “[I]t is language that the other is altered.”[3]

asking to respond

Blindfolding oneself while looking at the other so that each detail appears like a surprise. Being even more vehemently to emerge to the other. Requesting, laying claim to, suggesting, inviting to promote the exchange of words and gestures. When one hand invites the other hand. Exclaiming out of the surprise of who suggests another unprescribed relationship. Opening one’s ears to a murmur. Engendering the ability for an indirect response. Not creating questions, digging into the doubt. Writing dedicatory phrases, catapult-paragraphs, lightning-words. Paying attention to who appears submitted to their own, intimate desires and nonconmformities.

being late

Waiting for the other, the desire of the other, the movement of the other. An episode of “active” waiting, which lasts through the other’s present until when this moment becomes a rememorable past, possible to be a thing walking ahead. Enlarging the time of the gestures of encounter.

making agreements

Conversing, negotiating, being like a wind. Getting engaged in. Every and any gesture with the surroundings, with the weight of the inhabitants, with the wandering forms, with the passages created in the collision. Provoking, expecting, withdrawing, activating. Making questions about what one sees, opening oneself to mistakes, to misunderstandings. And giving rise to other times, when necessary. Dialoguing with those who pretend not to be there. Living together with adversities. Acting in the hic et nunc, with profound awareness, about the freedom of saying/hearing “yes” and “no,” at the same time that they underscore the responsibilities of each individual to elaborate a “here” or a “never.” Being constantly reminded that art is a “natural, legitimate activity like the entertainments, sport, advertising, religious practices.”[4]

collecting

Seeing, seeing again, touching, collecting, collecting something that is already there. Rummaging through the scattered, what is together, that which is aging, maturing, unperceived. Beckoning with one’s eyes. Noting what is concealing itself, what does not wish to be seen. An obsession, a need, a desire for evidences. Assuming the presence of the world as a huge museum of wonders. Seeking, looking for, convoking, gathering. Accumulating, becoming aware of excess, not subtracting, adding more and always, without the possibility of running out. Not editing, not choosing, not justifying the criterium, but living together, scrutinizing the group, the crowd, the many—“life ground down to a dust-cloud of tiny grains: sand, once more.”[5]

adding

Images of “Collection of local specimens.”

making a memoir

Forcing time, taking notes, recording, documenting, archiving, keeping stories. Soaking things up. Closing one’s eyes to freeze the scene. Trying to make everything treatable. Regret the forgetting. Attaching oneself to the filigree. Making oneself in the memory, overflowing.

“not-forgetting”

In order to never tell. Keeping the secrets of the story, prolonging the happening, telling, inventing, narrating, drawing, elucidating. Seeing memory as flawed, as lightning, as a path outside the horizon.

making a written record

Images of “Nosotros hablamos la misma lengua.”

weighing the word

Sculpting, weaving, braiding, polishing, drawing the material word. Exercising the body to expand oneself. Diagnosing the field in which the word throws tentacles, thinking and lingering in the air of one’s breath. Making a map of the distance between the mouth and the ear.

softening

Any and every gesture that aims to confuse, intrigue, perturb, disorient, intercross oneself and the other. Only playing. Not categorizing, not hierarchizing, not classifying. Not allowing oneself to be categorized, not allowing oneself to be hierarchized, not allowing oneself to be classified. Making the drawers/boxes of distinct and unequal things inseparable, diffuse, and foggy. Discovering and taking a risk in “notions that are somewhat liquid and able to describe phenomena of fusion, of ebullience, of interpenetration; notions that are modeled according to a living reality, in perpetual transformation.”[6]

being present / being absent

Perceiving one’s own body in a situation of excessive force, clamor, or in the anxious posture of one who wants to be a witness. Making oneself absent requires a making of oneself. Heading off for the space of resonance of the other. Assuming that this resonance changes the spirits of the people completely. Provoking one’s own absence. It is not the same as deserting. But rather planting oneself there, as a listener, as the sketch of a simple gesture—“I am here.” Approaching and seeing. Sustaining intimacy, complicity. Exercising a “written at the side” that prevents the embarrassment of drawing doodles with the other.

measuring the lack

I lack anything that is made of wind.… a cap, four pairs of leather shoes, a pair of plastic shoes—that you loved—a pair of sandals.
